8x8, Inc. VoIP Review: Virtual Office Pro Plans

8x8, Inc.’s Virtual Office Pro plan actually refers to a collection of office VoIP plans. You can choose different Virtual Office Pro plans based on the number of extensions and features that you need.

The Virtual Office Pro plans are distinct from the Virtual Office plans based on the following included features. All of the Virtual Office Pro plans include:

8x8, Inc. VoIP Review: Virtual Contact Center

The 8x8 Virtual Contact Center is a VoIP solution for building your own contact center. It is a hosted cloud-based turnkey solution that allows you to start a calling center for your business without having to manage, supply, and host a contact center out of your own location.

A cloud-based contact center means that your contact center is based off of a cloud system that exists and functions entirely on the Internet. This means that your agents only need a computer and a phone or headset to seamlessly integrate into your contact center system. “Hosted” just means that your service provider hosts, or manages, the system for you.

A turnkey solution means that it comes to you pre-assembled, or pre-configured. All you have to do is turn the key, or turn it on.

8x8, Inc. makes it very easy for you to implement their Virtual Contact Center solution, even if you’ve never tried to develop a contact center before. Check out their website to watch their demo video, and read through their informational pamphlets.

8x8, Inc. doesn’t offer prices on their Virtual Contact Center solution. However, you can call them at 1-866-446-2067 to get a price quote on a contact center solution for your office.

8x8, Inc. VoIP Review: IP Trunking

8x8, Inc.’s IP Trunking program is a SIP trunking solution. SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) trunking is a technology that allows you to enable your IP PBX to process VoIP calls so you don’t have to buy a new IP PBX or get a hosted PBX solution if you already have an IP PBX.

Included features:

  • Free calling between extensions in the office or at remote office locations.
  • Number porting available: Keep current phone numbers if you want to.
  • Inbound and outbound service: Services that allow you to receive as well as send VoIP calls.
  • Toll-free numbers available. Get a toll-free number for your office or port an existing one.

A PBX (public branch exchange) is the hardware or software system that an office uses to route calls in the offce. An IP PBX is an Internet protocol PBX, meaning it is a PBX that can process IP calls, like VoIP calls.

8x8, Inc. doesn’t give a price quote on their IP Trunking solution, but they do provide a particularly comprehensive explanation of how their system works on their website.

8x8, Inc. VoIP Review: 8x8 Virtual Room

8x8 Virtual Room allows you to integrate cloud video conferencing into your office. Cloud technology is a hosting system that stores a program or system entirely online. This means that you can access your cloud system from any location, and you can include people in the conference from any location with an Internet or phone connection.

Cloud conferencing systems like the 8x8 Virtual Room are popular because they allow you to hold video conferences in your office without having to buy lots of expensive video conferencing hardware. You can enable most any computer to work with the 8x8 Virtual Room system with the purchase of a simple web camera. This is true even if your computer doesn’t have a built in webcam. You can now buy simple webcams at very low prices, around $15.

8x8’s Virtual Room requires a VoIP phones, web phones, or web cameras to support service. According to 8x8, Virtual Room works with:

  • Polycom HDX Telepresence Systems (4000, 6000, 7000, 8000, and 9000)
  • Polycom VVX 1500 Business Media Phones
  • 8x8 Virtual Office Pro
  • Computers with webcams
  • Any phone (but if they don’t have camera components, you can only use them for audio participation in the conference)

The 8x8 Virtual Room program can be fairly expensive, so you should consider your needs carefully before choosing a plan.

You can choose between the following 8x8 Virtual Room plans:

  • Low-Def Plan for $199.99 (as of October 2012, 8x8 was offering a $99 special rate on the Low-Def Plan for the first year)
  • Standard-Def Plan for $349.99
  • High-Def Plan for $499.99

With the Low-Def Plan, supports a maximum video bandwidth of 384 kbps. You can use the Low-Def Plan with a very simple system of computers and phones. 8x8 does not recommend that you invest in more sophisticated systems like any of the Polycom HDX equipment because the plan offers such a low-definition video picture that it wouldn’t enhance anything to get the more sophisticated equipment.

Per Person additional cost for any conference participants over the included 15:

  • Low-Def: $14.99/person
  • Standard-Def: $19.99/per person
  • High-Def: $24.99/per person

There is an upper limit of 20 participants in any given video conference.

The Standard-Def- Plan provides you with a higher level of definition and it supports a maximum video bandwidth of 512 kbps, so you can use some more sophisticated technology with the Standard-Def Plan.

Finally, the High-Def Plan supports HD screens, as well as standard definition screens, and it supports a maximum video bandwidth of 2048 kbps. You can use the High-Def Plan with any level of video conferencing equipment.

With each Virtual Room plan, you can only hold one conference in a Virtual Room at a time, so if you have meetings overlap, there will be a $24.99/meeting charge.

8x8, Inc. VoIP Review: 8x8 Virtual Meeting

Virtual Meeting is a conferencing system that is supported by 8x8 VoIP technology. You can use Virtual Meeting for video conferences as well as voice conferences, though the video conferences with the Virtual Meeting program are not quite as advanced as the Virtual Room program.

The 8x8 Virtual Meeting system is easy to use on any computer with Internet access. You just download the softphone application for your computer. The Virtual Meeting solution will support computers from any location, so you can easily host conferences and meetings with your remote offices and partners.

The 8x8 Virtual Meeting service is included in the 8x8 Virtual Office Pro plans, but you can also get the Virtual Meeting program on its own. 8x8 Virtual Meeting varies in cost depending on whether you choose to pay monthly or annually, and based on the number of participants you want to cover in your virtual meetings.

Plans for up to 15 participants

New customers can get the plan for 15 participants for $39.99/month or $369.99/year if you pay for the year in advance. If you are willing to commit to the annual plan, you will save about $109.89 annually.

For current 8x8 customers, the plan costs $29.99/month or $325.99/year.

If you choose the plan with 15 participants, you can add individual participants one at a time for an additional fee. However, 8x8 doesn’t list the individual price to add extra participants to the 15 participant plan. This is probably a better plan for people who will usually have meetings with 15 or fewer participants. If you expect to regularly have more than 15 participants, you will probably get a better deal with the plan for up to 50 participants.

Plans for up to 50 participants

Regardless of whether you a current or a new 8x8 customer, the cost for the plan for 50 participants is the same. Either way, it will costs $49.99/month or $489.99/ year. If you choose the annual plan over the monthly plan, you will save you about $109.89 each year, but that is only if you plan to use the service each month. If you only want to use your Virtual Meeting program a couple of times, you can pay for it for the individual months in which you will need it and save money that way.

This plan covers Virtual Meetings for up to 50 participants maximum. You can not add individual extra participants to this plan as you can with the plan for up to 15 participants.

8x8, Inc. VoIP Review: 8x8 Mobile Talk

8x8’s Mobile Talk solution allows you to use 8x8 VoIP technology on your smartphone. Specifically, the Mobile Talk application was designed to help customers save money on their international calling. 8x8 advertises that they can save regular Mobile Talk users as much as 90% on their international calling.

To use the Mobile Talk app, you simply download the app onto your smartphone. You can do this through the smartphone itself, or through your computer.

You do not pay a regular fee to use the Mobile Talk app. Rather, you pay for the individual minutes of international calling. 8x8 offers some pretty low rates on international calls.

Example international calling rates:

  • The United Kingdom: $0.04/minute
  • China: $0.02/minute

However, some of their rates are a little more expensive than some other VoIP services with international calling rates. For example, it costs $0.18/minute to call the Philippines with 8x8. So, you should shop around for international rates for the countries that you will need to call most frequently. If, for example, you needed to call Israel frequently, 8x8 would be a great choice as they charge $0.01/minute for calls to Israel, while it might not make as much sense to use 8x8 for regular calls to Afghanistan, which cost $0.70/minute with 8x8.

8x8, Inc. VoIP Review: 8x8 VoIP Equipment

8x8 offers a detailed list of recommended hardware that will nicely complement a Virtual Office plan. Most of these are phones and accessories from Polycom and Cisco. It’s important to note 8x8’s recommended models. Frequently, a VoIP provider will design certain elements of their programs to work specifically with certain hardware, so while you could probably use the Virtual Office with other hardware, it may not work as well.

You can also get a softphone application from 8x8 to use your computer for VoIP calling.

8x8, Inc. VoIP Review: 8x8 Legal Terms

It is important that you read through the legal terms for VoIP service with 8x8. 8x8 offers residential as well as business service, so make sure that you read through the legal terms appropriate to your service plan.

Regardless of the plan you select, it’s important to note that 8x8 makes it clear that they do not support 911 service. This is a typical problem with VoIP service, but it is important to note.

8x8 does support e911 service, but there are some limitations as to which numbers will be covered by e911 service. For example, e911 numbers aren’t supported on virtual numbers or toll-free numbers from 8x8.

8x8 also offers a one year warranty on any equipment that you purchase with them. However, this warranty doesn’t cover stolen, lost, or altered equipment. It only covers faulty equipment.

8x8 also reserves the right to terminate or suspend service as a result of late payment. There will also be an additional late fee added to any existing charges which will be $10 or 1.5% of your monthly total.

Please note that the above information is not offered as legal advice. Please consult 8x8’s website to read their legal terms in full.

8x8, Inc. VoIP Review: 8x8 Money-Back Guarantee

8x8 offers customers a money back guarantee within the first 30 days of service. However, this money-back policy only covers the cost of activation fees and equipment. You are still responsible for paying the monthly fee, and the accrued cost of any minutes on metered plans. Shipping and handling costs are also not covered by the money-back guarantee.

8x8, Inc. VoIP Review: 8x8 Promotions

8x8 does offer some promotions and discounts, so you should check in regularly to see if they have any special offers going on at any time for new or existing customers. For example, at the time of publication of this content, you could get a special discount on the Unlimited Extension Pro plan for $49.99/month per extension, rather than the usual rate of $64.99. You could also get the Low-Def Virtual Room plan on sale for $99 instead of the usual $199.99.

8x8 Works Great We've been using 8x8 for over a year now and I feel it's time I left them a review. The best way to put it is that I have no complaints because the service does everything it is supposed to do, is rarely ever "down", and we get all of this at a great price compared to what we were paying before. My favorite feature is the way 8x8 integrates with your mobile phone. I can make calls using their app on my mobile phone and it will show up as my office number in the caller ID of the person I'm calling, which is great when I am out of the office. If you're looking for solid, inexpensive phone service with great features that just works, go with 8x8.

RAVING 8X8 FAN! First, if you want a complete communications solution, I highly recommend 8x8! We are an IT consulting firm, Managed Service Provider, and we started using 8x8 about 2 years ago and haven't had any issues at all. From the beginning, I cant say enough how great their support is. The entire process was an extremely pleasant one. There was no pressure sales tactics from my sales rep. Shipment was very quick and everything arrived neatly packed. The installation was simple and easy; so easy, my 10 year old could have done it. If you need any help, the support is quick, courteous and they speak to you in terms that you can understand! I have called for help on a number of occasions and theyve never let me down. They have many options for phones and in different price ranges. They are all solid and have so many features such as web conferencing, Internet faxing, smartphone integration, softphone for your computer, reporting and an online dashboard that gives you total control over your entire phone system. One of my favorite features is getting voicemails in your email and smart phone. Most of my team is on the road quite a bit so whenever a client calls our desk phones, we wouldnt know about it until we were back in the office. With 8x8, we are notified within seconds if a client calls us in the office and leaves a message. Theres even a feature that allows you to dial multiple phone numbers, like your cell and/or home number, then the person would say their name and allow you to screen the call so you can make the decision if you want to take the call or forward it to voicemail. My number one concern was voice quality, and over the last two years I am extremely pleased to say that we havent had any issues. In fact, weve had so much success over the last couple of years that we have recently signed on as a partner and are now offering the 8x8 services to all of our clients. I highly recommend 8X8!RAVING 8X8 FAN!

The installation process was seamless. They are always adding new equipment and features, such as mobile apps and cordless phones that have increased our company's productivity. 8x8: Legendary Support We have been using 8x8 for 4 months now and have not had any issues. Moved from another VoIP provider that had little to zero support. 8x8 has tons of features included in the standard price including smartphone app, softphone, auto-attendant. The voice quality has not been an issue and would reccomend it to anyone looking for an enterprise class product at a small business price.

I have tried other VOIP companies and their servers go down...this is the only company that has always been up. The Bad:

Company harvested emails of my customers and is spamming them. Company double charges ports on web meetings, making a 15 port account receive overage chares with as few as 8 participants. Price is 3x other options. I was a customer in their first six months in the VOIP business in 2005 and have rejected them because of the deterioration of ethics and service I experienced, and that the people I recommended 8x8 to experienced.

8x8 has lost its ethics and lost its way I have been a customer since 2005, when 8x8 was still calling itself packet8. I was a very happy one for years. As you will see below, 8x8 has lost its ethics and lost it way as a service oriented company.I steered business to 8x8 and have even had personal service from the CEO because they were so small when I started. Over the last several years, they have not stayed price competitive, but I was fine with that because I had a happy history with the company. Then they overcharged a non profit I recommended them to by a significant amount. I had to get involved and fight them on it, finally involving the CEO directly. The billing was reversed, but they would not make a commitment that this would never happen again since they believed they were in the right. I had the non-profit close the account. After that, it was discovered that 8x8 harvested email addresses of every person ever invited to a virtual meeting by that non-profit and has been constantly spamming all of those people ever since. Two honey pot addresses for the non-profit's invitations receive 5 or more offers per week written in a mail merge to "[undisclosed person]".I complained to the company multiple times and they will not explain this unethical behavior nor change it. This time the CEO has not responded. As a result, I am canceling my account today. I have written the people being spammed to apologize and suggested that they file CANSPAM complaints since almost all are in the USA.After a review of options, I will prepay two year with a vendor which is $6.21 per month plus CA tax.8x8 has lost its ethics, and lost its way. I am so upset that it was painful to give them a 4 star rating for features, and 3's for sound and reliability, but those are true assessments. Ethics is a non-negotiable for me, so the last two items actually bring my overall rating to less than half a star if I had the opportunity to assess the organization as a whole.

8x8 Full Service Provider The installation process was not as smooth as we had hoped, but it did nto affect us as we had our old phone systeme in place until the new system came up. At first we thought it might vbe 8x8 quality issues, but we found out after they recommended to us to get a $100 router that prioritizes voice packets the service and quality was great. We have come to learn that the quality provided by 8x8 is great and as soon as we learned that we had to prioritize packets in our router that was a simple setting we were quite happy.

8x8 Customer Review The quality of Packet 8 service is as good and perhaps even better than regular phone service, and definitely much better than mobile service.I have called a wide range of differenty phone numbers around the world and never had any problems.Furthermore, I have taken the unit with me to Russia and used it from Moscow to place calls to Britain and the United States and have enjoyed the same high quality connections from Moscow as from here in Seattle. And a colleague now has a Packet 8 phone in London and is using it for international calling all around the world, also without any problems. One of the best things about Packet 8 is the savings! Unlike regular phone service, I am not paying massive surcharges in taxes to my local city and state and federal government. There is just one, single 3% federal tax.

8x8 - Voip Provider Review My Packet8 experience has been absolutely wonderful so far. When I received my Uniden 1868P VoIP Internet Phone adapter/telephone combo device, I was able to install it in minutes due to the excellent instructions that were enclosed. After making the necessary cable connections, I lifted the receiver, dialed the special code that was provided, and had an email confirming my activation within minutes. I made my first "live" internet phone call within 15 minutes of unpacking the adapter. As an IT professional, I have installed hundreds of new hardware devices and have never experienced a setup as quick and easy as this one.

Hands down, 8x8 are the best that I have ever dealt with throughout the many, many years being in this industry. 8x8: wonderful customer support As the owner of a small business, I have locations in other parts of the U.S. and canada. We all needed to have the same toll free number, just have different extensions...we tried with another VoIP provider and it was awful. We had their service and phones for 9 days. The phones were only operable 1 day out of the 9. 8 x 8 offers a full service business solution with the most cost effective way. The features that they offer are second to none. I would never go back to anyone else again, for our business phones. The customer support here is wonderful. We had a problem with one phone in a satellite office that also has vonage, the tech support walked through every step for an employee to restart everything and plug everything in and provide him with the correct IP address and within a half an hour, he was up and running. We are very very pleased for the decision that we made to come to 8 x 8.

8x8 saved me money I am so happy that I moved to 8x8 because my service has been great and my telecommunications costs have gone way down. I am a contractor and I love the follow me and other features that I got for free. I signed up and they had a special going for free installation, not really sure what installation was because they just shipped my preprogrammed phones and I plugged them in and everything worked, but it was free. I also got a phone for my house and if no one answers at the office it rings on my home phone. I love it.

Great for small business Packet8 was the lower cost solution to our needs. Phone systems for traditional phones lines are expensive, but the Packet8 VOIP service is scaleable as we grow with no technicians required to set up. Great example was when I moved my company to a new office -- all we did was set up the DSL on our computer network and the phones worked immediately. Also great for remote employees working from home who are just another extension in your office no matter where they are geographically -- and you can have them billed directly for their extensions.

Re: 8x8 Packet8 Virtual OfficeWe have had the service for almost a year and a half. For the most part we are very satisfied. Only three gripes: 1) occasional (very uncommon) digital artifacting during calls (cannot hear the person we're talking to for a second or two); 2) call waiting caller ID causes two short (~2 second) beeps/pauses that cause us to not be able to hear the current conversation momentarily (they say they can turn this off - but then you lose the call waiting caller ID feature); 3) It took a LONG time and a LOT of phone calls with customer service to finally get our outbound caller ID to show up correctly (on the phones of people we're calling).

Happy with VOIP We made the switch about 2 years ago. It was not all easy in the early stages as we use high speed wireless for our internet and encountered some hardware/firmware issues early one. However, once those were resolved we have had a fairly good experience. Saved a lot of money and it has enabled us, with a very scattered work crew, to operate with the kind of telephone efficiency you normally could only have gotten from very expensive Centrex type systems.
